I had agreed with myself that I would take 3 weeks off from training, watching the diet and early nights. That finished yesterday and although I struggled a bit I managed a short run for just over 30 mins.
Today I headed out for a long easy bike ride and did 5 hrs at an easy pace with a friend who is preparing fOR IM UK in September, the longer spins are so much easier with company. We missed most of the showers and even saw some sunshine, dont you love the Irish summer...
This week I will try to just train most days, not with any particular structure but just to get the body back into the training mode.
Food is also a major target this week, coffee and sweet foods are for the chop, I developed a real tase for both cakes and coffee in France and will just try to kick both this week...well cut down the coffee at least.......I have to have some vices

Wednesday:
I did a short run before work, this runing lark is tougher than I remember. It will probably take a week or two to get back to normal.
Thursday:
I have some things to work on over the next couple of months before getting back into full training, leg strength, core strength including a niggly back injury and running technique. These are the ones I will concentrate on for the next 2 months or so (Then I will look at learning how to swim properly there is a really big motivator for this.... I have entered IronMan South Africa and aparently they have sharks down there, jeez as if I didn't get freaked enough with jellyfish now I have to make sure I dont get eaten while in the water......) Anyway I started some bodyweight exercises on Wednesday and they felt very easy, I reckoned I was doing them wrong or something?? The pain in my backside and quads this morning let me know they are not as easy as I had thought and I was doing them right after all.
Friday:
I did a short easy run before work, 40 mins or so and I will do an hour easy on the bike this evening. Tomorrow is the first day in the pool in 4 weeks I reckon that will be as tough as the running.

Maybe a good start would be to not put power bar gels on your cornflakes every day.....

But cornflakes are just sooo bland without caffienated green apple gels.........
Saturday
I was tired and skipped the swim.
Sunday
I met up with the Triathlon Ireland High Performance Development Squad on their training camp in Limerick and did a 3 hour bike spin with them. This was a really enjoyable session, the spin was quick but not crazy. I was lucky to arrive a week into the training camp so legs were probably not fully fresh.
I got to chat to Gav Noble for a while on the bike spin which was very interesting, you could really see the difference in his attitude and training of a full time pro triathlete.
I also got to spend some time talking to and watching Chris Jones, Chris is the head coach of the squad and has coached triathletes to World Championships. Its a long time since I felt like I knew so little about triathlon but Chris's knowledge is amazing. Watching him teach running drills on the track, something I was vaguely aware of was a real eye opener. All in all a very enjoyable day.
Monday
I did a 6 hour spin with Aisling in the mountains weather was really good to us and if Aislings coach is reading this we didn't stop for coffee and a sandwich
Distance was 85 miles/136k.
Tuesday I had hoped to do a couple of short sessions but after an easy hour on the bike I realised I was knackered.
I have started working with a new coach and he wants me to keep a record of what my motivation and energy levels are on a daily and weekly basis. Sunday and Monday would have scored 5/5 but Tues was down at about 1/5. I am going to switch sessions so Tuesday will be an easy day so I can recover after the weekend and my long day Monday.

I always get blamed, we stopped for coffee and it was Robs fault, we ran over 2 extra mountains, Rob thought it would be a good idea, I entered an some crazy race Rob made me do it....jeez
Anyway the week went from a good start to pretty sluggish...then stopped
Wednesday
I was hoping to do 3 sessions run, swim and strength/core work. I did the run and felt pretty good for the first time in a long while I then headed to the pool to find the schedule has changed and the session was over...
Thursday:
I met Aisling for a run thinking my running legs were coming back but after 30 minutes I was knackered, trying not to let it show that I was dying....nodding at all the right times, smiling and hoping I didnt look as bad as I felt.
After the run I went to the pool as I had skipped the early session and after 10 min of splashing up and down I knocked it on the head and went for lunch.

I was expecting a story about coffee and chocolate cake while swimming......
And all those things are SO your fault! I've no idea how I got suckered into an ironman, and since you're the first triathlete I ever met then logic says that's your fauilt too....
While my diet is not as good as it was earlier in the year I'm not quite eating cake in the pool....yet Although that could change if I can figure a way to sneak the plate and cup past the life guard.
Friday
Short swim and a short strength session.
I am hoping to work on the swim over the next couple of weeks. Although I felt good today, I just need to get the endurance back up.

Sat
I did an easy 40 minute run followed by my first proper structured swim since I started back although it wasnt a very long set, only 1400mtrs. I felt ok on the run but it was really slow, distance 7-8k. The swim was also an enjoyable session, starting to feel like a triathlete again. I always find swimming is the part that makes me feel like that.
Sunday
I was hillwalking for the first time in about a year, we had planed to do about 3-4 hours. We were climbing Croagh Patrick which we expected to take about 1:50 up and 1:30 down. We were still a long way from the mountain when we hit a traffic jam. Sunday was the pilgrimage day and there was expected to be over 25000 people on the mountain.
Instead of sitting in the car for ages not going anywhere we parked and started walking thinking it would be an extra 15-20 minutes. It turned out to be a big traffic jam and the walk to the start of the climb took over an hour. The climb itself was slow due to the number of people out the climb was full with queue's forming at narrow parts of the trail.
We finally made the top and had some food. Parts of the descent was really fun sliding down the scree and loose rocks. About 2/3 way back down it was decided that I would head back for the car so we wouldnt all have the long walk. I ran the last 1/3 of the descent and on back to the car. All in it was 6 hours walking/climbing/running so a really good session. It was nice to do something different while still getting some training in.
Monday
Bike session I did a 6 hour bike ride heading out early and getting back just after lunch. I didnt bring quite enough food and had to stop a couple of times to stock up. My apetite is coming back with a vengance since I have started training again, I am constantly hungry and constantly eating. Weight is holding at 65kg (Despite all the eating) which is about race weight for me.
Last week finished well with just under 18 hours training and this week is off to a good start with 6 done already.
