Oct 3rd, Guinness Triathlon in the Guinness pool and Phoenix Park.
Paul Brennan and Myself set out from Kildare wondering if we should be bringing tri suits or winter gear as there was a strong cold wind blowing and rain forecast. When we got to Dublin there was gale blowing and as we left our running shoes at the park transition area the Guinness guys were struggling big time to errect the banner over the finish line.
Onto the pool where the swim was already underway. There were 110 swimmers on the list with many working in relay teams. They worked a system of three per lane with one in every time someone got out starting with the slowest swimmers. Paul and Myself were in the last 25 so had a bit of a wait.
Eventually we got going. Swim went well for both of us, Paul did approx 14 mins I did 15 mins happy with that. Now for the fun. Onto the bike and down the quays. The lights at Huston station were a lottery. I had a short stop and a couple of irate taxi drivers as I crossed three lanes of traffic to get up Parkgate street. Paul wasnt as lucky as he spent about 2 mins waiting for lights to change. Up Chesterfield avenue through the park for three laps of a circuit which was modified due to roadworks.
As I entered the park the heavens opened and continued up with driving rain in my face wishing for the turn to come with the wind at my back. That came later on the windy roads at the back of the park that were now covered in wet leaves and branches which were being blown off the trees. Finished the cycle ok and headed off on the run. It was more straightforward. Head down and keep going. Was glad to see the finish line in the distance across the 15 acres even if it was makeshift held together for the wind. Finished the race in 5th place(1hr 23) and Paul (1hr 27) finished in 9th.
A good finiish to the season. There were going to be no PB's in those conditions but overall it was very enjoyable. Now I know why yhe season finishes at end Sept.
This race was run in aid of Our Lady's childrens hospital an my link is still open for sponsorship for anyone who wants to sponsor Paul or Myself.
