World's End Triathlon
On Saturday last myself and Ger headed down to Castleconnell to take part in the 'World's End' Sprint Triathlon. An odd name I thought and this feeling was reinforced at registration when we saw the very clear 'No Swimming' sign. Luckily the swim was further up river. The locals were very reassuring however as they happily informed us that there had been a lot of rain and the river was quite full - we would be well out of our depth the whole way. My son, who knows how crap a swimmer I am, thoughtfully asked be to not to drown.
It turned out that this would be the best thing that could have happened to me. All my previous outings had been downstream with solid footing throughout. This time faced with a swim that went 375m against the current before turning and coming back down I realised that there was no way to fudge this one, no drifting down casually on the current, it was time to get in and swim like I had been training to. Guess what - its easy! A bit slow perhaps but who cares. Now I know I can do it nothing can stop me now. I wasn't last out of the water but I wasn't far off it but the bike course was great and I was picking people off for fun. (I managed to come 15th fastest on the bike). Back into transition and off on the run. The weather throughout was glorious and the run was very enjoyable. I finished in the middle of the field in my most controlled race so far. I will need to sharpen up my swim and run times but this season was all about the water.
Not to forget Ger. He waved me goodbye at the start and quickly disappeared upstream. By all accounts he put in a strong performance on all three sections and finished in 15th place overall. Fair dues to you!
This is a lovely course, the river is wide and deep but the current is very gentle. Its a small event in a picturesque village and well organised. Both the bike and run course are straightforward with only a couple of small hills. I'd recommend it to anyone and I'll be back next year to try and put in a decent time.
